Review: Alila Seminyak
9.0/10
Exceptional
Best Bali Hotels score
Alila Seminyak is my favourite Hyatt in Bali. The service is excellent, you can walk to dinner, and every night the sun goes down right over the pools.
The catch is the room. Book a suite in the main building, not the entry Deluxe, and it’s hard to fault.
- Service
The best thing here. Problems get fixed fast.
- Location
On the sand at Petitenget, with dinner on foot. The sea is for looking at.
- Pools
Sunset infinity pools and an adults-only pool.
- Rooms
Big suites with proper baths. Eleven years old, and the TVs and showers show it.
- Food
A great breakfast on the sand. Dinner is good, but pricey.
- Value
Cheaper than the other big names on this beach.
- Kids
A real kids club and a family pool, but a family of four needs a suite.
Things I loved
- The sunset pools. The infinity pools face the sea, and the sun sets right over them. The adults-only Serene Pool is where I’d spend my afternoons.
- The service. It’s the best thing about the hotel. If something’s wrong, it gets fixed quickly, and nobody makes you chase it.
- Dinner on foot. Eat Street is a few minutes’ walk, and Potato Head is a short walk along the sand. There are free bikes and a buggy to Seminyak Square too.
- The suites. Even the smallest is 60 square metres, with a bath and a sofa. In the right one, you look straight out to sea.
- Breakfast on the sand. Seasalt does a buffet plus cooked-to-order dishes, right on the beach. It’s the best meal here.
What could be better
- The entry rooms. The Deluxe rooms are in a separate building, across a bridge from the pools, with no sea view. At 46 square metres they’re not small, but they’re not why you come.
- It’s showing its age. It opened in 2015, and the TVs, shower pressure and finishes show it. As of October 2026, no refit has been announced.
- Beach-club noise. Rooms on the beach-club side can get bass from the clubs next door, from late morning into the evening. It’s usually quiet by 10 pm.
- The sea. It’s a surf beach with rips, so the pools do the swimming. From November to March, plastic washes up after storms.
Rooms
Every room has a king, and the sizes include the balcony or terrace. Only the Deluxe rooms are shower-only. Every suite has a bath and a separate shower.
- King Bed Deluxe: 46 square metres, in the separate building by the entrance, with a footbridge to the main hotel. Two adults, and don’t expect a sea view.
- King Bed Pool Access Deluxe: the same room, with access to the Relax Pool.
- Ocean View Suite: 60 square metres in the main building, with a sofa and a side-on view of the sea over the Serene Pool. On the lower floors you get a sliver of sea, so ask for level 3 or 4.
- Terrace Suite: 66 square metres on the ground floor, stepping out to the Serene Pool. Handy, but you’re on show to everyone at the pool.
- Deluxe Suite: 72 square metres in the main building, on the garden side. No sea view, and you’ll hear the beach club until about 10 pm.
- Alila Terrace Suite: 78 square metres on the ground floor, looking over the garden and the pool.
- Alila Ocean View Suite: 72 square metres in the oceanfront block, looking straight out to sea. My pick.
- Seminyak Suite: just four of them, at 117 square metres, with a separate living room, a big balcony and a freestanding bath.
- Beach Suite: 177 square metres on a corner, with a wrap-around balcony, two living areas, a dining area and a sofa bed. It’s one bedroom, not two.
- Alila Penthouse: on the rooftop, with three king bedrooms, three bathrooms, an infinity pool and a butler. The one if you’re bringing the whole family.
As a couple, I’d book the Alila Ocean View Suite. If that’s sold out, take an Ocean View Suite on level 3 or 4.
For a family of four, skip the Deluxe rooms, which are two adults only. Not every suite takes two kids. The Deluxe Suite, Seminyak Suite and Beach Suite do, each with a sofa bed. I’d book the Seminyak Suite for the separate living room, or the Deluxe Suite if you’d rather not pay for it.
Wherever you are, ask for a room away from the beach-club side.
Pools and kids
There are several pools, and they’re the reason to book.
- The infinity pools: up on the upper level, facing the sunset. One is the family pool, set further back.
- The Serene Pool: adults only, and the quietest spot in the hotel. Beds go early.
- The Beach Bar pool: at ground level by the sand. Outside visitors can pay to use it, so it’s the busiest.
For a quiet swim, I’d head to the upper pools. Most people never find them.
The Play Alila kids club takes kids up to 12, and under-3s need an adult with them. Some activities cost extra, and babysitting can be arranged. The hotel runs bigger programmes over Easter and Christmas.
With one or two kids who’ll live in the pools, it works. With toddlers who want a beach to paddle at, I’d book a Nusa Dua family resort on the calm east coast instead.
Food
Seasalt is the main restaurant, on the sand. It does seafood with Balinese, Japanese and Mediterranean touches. Breakfast is the highlight, and the weekend brunch is worth booking ahead.
The Beach Bar is the sunset spot, with wood-fired pizza and a live band at night. There’s a coffee bar, and room service runs 24 hours.
Dinner is good but pricey for what you get. With Eat Street a few minutes away, I’d eat out most nights and save Seasalt for breakfast and one dinner.
Location
It’s on the sand at Petitenget, with no road to cross. This is the quieter, north end of Seminyak, but it’s beach-club country.
Eat Street and the restaurants on Jalan Petitenget are a short walk. The footpaths outside are patchy, though, so I’d take the buggy or a Grab past Eat Street.
The airport is about 30 minutes away. In late-afternoon traffic, allow 60 to 90.
The beach is wide and the sunsets are some of the best in Bali. Just don’t plan on swimming in the sea.
Overall
Alila Seminyak is the Hyatt I’d book in Bali, and one of the best beach hotels in Seminyak for a couple. I love the pools, the service and being able to walk to dinner. Book a main-building suite and ask for a quiet side, and the age of the rooms barely matters.
Book it if you’re a couple or friends who want sunset pools, an adults-only pool and dinner on foot. Skip it if you want to swim in the sea, or need a guaranteed quiet room. It’s not for you if you want a sea view in the cheapest room, either.
Alternatives nearby
- W Bali – Seminyak. Bigger rooms and a livelier scene. It’s the one for a party rather than a sunset swim.
- The Samaya. Every villa has its own pool, and it’s much quieter. Worth it if peace matters more to you than a pool scene.
- Andaz Bali. The other design-led Hyatt 5-star, over in Sanur. You swap Seminyak’s sunsets for calm water and the best rooms in Sanur.
