Review: Courtyard by Marriott Bali Seminyak Resort
7.7/10
Very good
Best Bali Hotels score
The Courtyard is the sensible family base in Seminyak. The pool is big and lively, the staff are some of the friendliest in Bali, and it’s in the mid-range band.
The catch is that it isn’t on the beach, and the rooms are small. Book it to spend the saving on dinners out, not for the room itself.
- Service
The best thing about the place. Some of the friendliest staff in Seminyak.
- Value
Cheap for Seminyak. Not that cheap for a hotel with no beach, and breakfast is often extra.
- Pools
Three pools, a sunken bar and live music. Social, not quiet, and no slide.
- Kids
A kids club for 4 to 12s and a shallow end, but no slide.
- Food
Breakfast is the win. Dinner is fine, and Eat Street is a shuttle away.
- Location
Mid-Seminyak, 5 to 15 minutes from the sand, with a free shuttle.
- Rooms
Small, clean and starting to show their age.
Things I loved
- The staff. I think they’re the best thing about the Courtyard. The front desk sorts things fast, and the pool bar team are half the reason the pool works.
- The pool. There are three of them, stepping down in tiers, with a sunken bar, beanbags and live music. The kids are in the water all day while you’re at the bar.
- Breakfast. It’s the best meal in the hotel. It isn’t in every rate, so book one that includes it.
- The free shuttle. It runs to the hotel’s beach area and to Eat Street, so the walk doesn’t matter much.
- The price. It’s in the mid-range band, well under the beachfront hotels at the Petitenget end. That leaves a lot more for dinners out.
What could be better
- It’s not on the beach. It’s a 5 to 15 minute walk to the sand. And it’s a surf beach, so the pool does the swimming anyway.
- The rooms are small and a bit tired. The entry rooms are about 32 square metres, and they’re starting to show their age.
- The pool isn’t quiet. There’s music at the pool and a pool bar open until 10 pm. Families wanting a nap by the water won’t find one.
- No waterslide. If your kids want slides, this isn’t the place. The big Nusa Dua resorts do that better.
- Breakfast is often extra. Lots of rates are room-only, so add it up before you book.
Rooms
There are about 290 rooms around the pools, in a select-service Courtyard. It’s a 4-star, whatever the booking sites say.
- Deluxe City View: about 32 square metres, with a king or two singles, a balcony and a shower. The view is the town, not the pool.
- Deluxe Pool View: the same room, with the balcony over the pool. Fine for a couple or a family of three.
- Deluxe Pool Terrace: the same room on the ground floor, with a terrace that steps straight into the pool. Great for a couple, or kids who swim well, but people walk past all day.
- Deluxe Family Room: 34 square metres with two queen beds, on the upper floors with a city view. It’s the only standard room for a family of four.
- One Bedroom Suite Pool View: 56 square metres on an upper floor, with a separate living room and a balcony over the pool.
- One Bedroom Suite Pool Terrace: the same suite on the ground floor, with steps into the pool. It’s the only suite with pool access.
- Two Bedroom Suite: 92 square metres, with a king, two singles, a separate living room, a bath and a fridge. This is the real family room.
For a couple, I’d book a pool-view Deluxe on an upper floor, away from the pool bar. For a family of four on a budget, the Deluxe Family Room. If you’d otherwise book two rooms, I’d book the Two Bedroom Suite instead.
Pools and kids
The whole place is built around the pools. There’s the Main Pool, the Fountain Pool and a pool with a sunken bar, all open from 7 am to 9 pm. The main pool has a shallow end for little ones.
It’s a busy pool. In the arvo there’s music, and on some nights a live band plays by the buffet. Light sleepers should ask for a room away from it.
The Little Savana kids club takes kids aged about 4 to 12, with a ball pit, gaming pods, crafts and Balinese dance. Under-4s need a parent with them, or you can book a babysitter.
Food
- Seminyak Kitchen is the all-day restaurant, and it’s where breakfast happens. Breakfast is the highlight.
- The Pool Bar runs from 10 am to 10 pm, with a daily happy hour.
- What The Truck! does Mexican street food out of a VW Kombi. It’s the easy kids’ lunch.
- Seminyak Meat Shop is the steakhouse, open for dinner but closed on Thursdays.
Dinner in the hotel is fine, but I wouldn’t eat in every night. Eat Street and Seminyak’s restaurants are a short shuttle or Grab away, and that’s half the point of staying here.
Location
The Courtyard is in mid-to-south Seminyak, on Jalan Camplung Tanduk, closer to Legian than to Petitenget. That’s quieter and cheaper than the beach-club end, but you don’t get the beach clubs on your doorstep.
The beach is 5 to 15 minutes on foot, or take the free shuttle. Seminyak Square is about 15 minutes’ walk, and the footpaths are patchy, so I’d use the shuttle with kids.
The airport is about 30 minutes away, and 60 in late-afternoon traffic.
This isn’t the Courtyard in Nusa Dua. That one has a bigger pool complex and calmer water for toddlers. This one is better for older kids and dinners out.
Overall
In my Marriott round-up I left the Courtyards out, and for most of Bali that stands. This one is the exception, for families on a budget.
I’d book it for the pool, the staff and the price. You give up a big room and the beach for them, and I think that’s a fair trade if you’d rather spend on dinners out.
Book it if you’ve got kids who live in the pool, you want friendly staff and you’d rather spend the saving on Seminyak’s restaurants. Skip it if you want to walk out onto the sand, need a big room or want a quiet pool.
Alternatives nearby
- Hotel Indigo Bali Seminyak Beach. On the same street, a lane from the sand, with bigger rooms, an adults-only pool and a great breakfast, for more money. No kids club, so it’s for when the beach matters more than the club.
- Alila Seminyak. On the beach at Petitenget, with a kids club and sunset pools. A family of four needs a suite, so it’s worth it if you can stretch.
- W Bali – Seminyak. Huge rooms that fit a family of four, but it’s loud, has no kids club and costs far more. Only for teens.
